Free Events in New York City

Everything on our calendar that costs nothing to attend — free museum nights, outdoor films and concerts, birding walks, public fishing and the standing volunteer shifts across the five boroughs. Where a free event needs a reservation, is residents-only, or is free with admission, the card says so.

Free, by what you actually want to do

The free calendar, by rhythm

A lot of what is free in New York repeats on a fixed night, so you don't have to catch it on one date. The museum rhythm is the easiest to plan around: UNIQLO Friday Nights at MoMA (5:30–8:30 PM, free for New York State residents with a reservation), Poster House free every Friday and on the third Sunday of the month, Community Free Wednesdays at the New York Botanical Garden for city residents, Late-Night Summer Wednesdays at the Museum of the City of New York (free until 9 PM), and Cooper Hewitt's pay-what-you-wish hour from 5 to 6 PM every day. Pioneer Works opens the whole building free on the second Sunday of each month.

The outdoor rhythm runs from spring to early autumn and costs nothing at all: Bryant Park has juggling at noon on weekdays, board games Tuesday to Saturday, the Reading Room daily from 11, Monday movie nights on the lawn and Picnic Performances most evenings through mid-September; Socrates Sculpture Park runs Sunday morning yoga and Tuesday sunset meditation; Randall's Island has Saturday-morning and Tuesday-evening yoga; the Lena Horne Bandshell in Prospect Park runs free concert nights. Add the free birding walks — Bryant Park, Governors Island on Saturdays at 2:15, Gabriel Willow's Central Park and Prospect Park walks — and the free public fishing at Pier 51 and East River Park.

Then there is the largest free category on the site, which people often don't think of as an event: volunteer days. The Billion Oyster Project runs public shifts Tuesday to Saturday at the Battery Maritime Building, and the Gowanus Canal Conservancy, Newtown Creek Alliance, Bronx River Alliance, Queens Botanical Garden, Prospect Park Alliance, Randall's Island and Earth Matter on Governors Island all run standing weekly shifts. They are free, they are outdoors, and most of them still have places. The full list is on the volunteer & cleanups page.

What “free” means on this page

Free here means no ticket and no admission charge, read off the venue's own listing by a person. It does not mean walk-up: several of the best free things in New York cap numbers, so “free · registration required” or “free · RSVP” is written on the card where it applies, and the volunteer shifts often fill a week ahead. It also does not quietly include free with admission — where a talk or a drop-in drawing session is free once you have paid to get into the museum, the card says exactly that. Free for residents only — MoMA's Friday nights, NYBG's Wednesdays — is labelled too, because it matters at the door.

Questions people ask

Which museums are free on which night in NYC?+
The regular ones we track: MoMA is free Friday 5:30–8:30 PM for New York State residents (reserve ahead); the Museum of the City of New York is free until 9 PM on summer Wednesdays; Poster House is free every Friday and on the third Sunday; Cooper Hewitt is pay-what-you-wish 5–6 PM daily; the New York Botanical Garden is free to city residents on Wednesdays; Pioneer Works is free on the second Sunday of the month.
Are the free events on this page walk-up or do I need to book?+
Both, and the card tells you which. Bryant Park, Poster House Fridays and the bandshell concerts are walk-up. MoMA Friday nights, the Billion Oyster Project shifts, Prospect Park volunteer days and most of the garden mornings need a reservation, and the volunteer shifts are the ones that actually run out.
What is free to do in New York outdoors?+
From roughly April to October: Bryant Park (juggling at noon, games, movies on Mondays, Picnic Performances most evenings), Socrates Sculpture Park yoga and meditation, Randall’s Island yoga, free birding walks in Central Park, Prospect Park, Bryant Park and Governors Island, and free public fishing at Pier 51 and East River Park. All of it is on this page when it is in season.
Are volunteer days really free events?+
Yes, and they are the biggest free category here. A morning at the Gowanus rain gardens, the Bronx River Foodway, the Queens Botanical Garden farm or a Billion Oyster Project oyster-cage check costs nothing, needs no experience, and most groups will lend you gloves and tools. Some ask for a waiver or a first orientation shift; the card says so.
