Volunteer opportunities in NYC, by day of the week

46 places in New York City with a standing volunteer shift you can join as one person — parks and forests, community farms, soup kitchens and meal delivery, animal shelters, tutoring. Arranged by the weekday they run, with the minimum age, the orientation you need first, and the answer to the question nobody prints clearly: can you just turn up?

For almost all of them, the answer is no. Three say yes.

The short answer

The easiest volunteer shifts to join in New York this week are Randall's Island Urban Farm on Sunday mornings, the Snug Harbor Heritage Farm on Staten Island on Saturday mornings, and It's My Park projects in the spring and autumn seasons — the only three that welcome walk-ups.

Everything else needs a booking, and most need a one-time orientation first: an online session for City Harvest and New York Cares, an information session for Central Park's Green Team. Food kitchens such as Holy Apostles and God's Love We Deliver run shifts every weekday. Most park and garden work pauses between November and March; kitchens and shelters run all year.

The week at a glance

Each standing shift under the day it runs. Tap a name for the minimum age, the orientation and the sign-up link.

15 more organisations publish no fixed weekday: animal shelters, thrift shops, tutoring programmes and the big portals such as New York Cares and NYC Service, where you book a dated project from a calendar. They are in the full list below.

The three you can just turn up to

The rarest fact on any volunteer page, and the one that matters if you want to go this weekend.

How volunteering in New York works

Orientation comes first

City Harvest and New York Cares ask new volunteers to complete a short online orientation; Central Park Conservancy runs an information session before Green Team and weekly shifts; The Battery wants an application, a video and an intro shift. Do it a week before you want to go.

Book, then show up early

Most shifts are capped and booked through a calendar, Eventbrite or Volgistics. Billion Oyster Project releases new dates on the 15th of the month and they go quickly.

Check the age rule

Central Park adult programmes, Prospect Park Fall Fix Up, GrowNYC, Housing Works, Wild Bird Fund and Animal Care Centers are 18 and over. Many park shifts take teens with an adult.

Commitments vary a lot

A park morning is three hours, once. Animal Care Centers asks for six months, Wild Bird Fund four, Reading Partners a weekly slot, NYC CERT ten training sessions and a year of service.

Winter is quieter outdoors

Randall's Island farm runs April to mid-October, Brooklyn Bridge Park's Green Team April to October, NYRP April to November. Kitchens, food banks and shelters run year-round.

Wear the right things

Closed-toe shoes and clothes that can get dirty for any park, farm or reef shift; gloves and tools are usually provided. Kitchens ask for hair tied back.

Volunteering with kids and teens

Central Park runs Family Volunteer Days on Saturday mornings for children 4 and up with a parent, and teen sessions on Saturday afternoons; both need booking about four weeks ahead. City Harvest repack and Food Bank for NYC's mobile pantry take children from 10 with a chaperone. God's Love We Deliver takes 13 to 15-year-olds in the kitchen with a parent. Holy Apostles takes any age, with under-12s accompanied, and Citymeals on Wheels lets under-18s deliver meals with an adult. New York Cares lists projects for children from 5.

Volunteering as a group or a company

Most organisations here route groups to a separate email rather than the public calendar, and several cap group size — Van Cortlandt Park asks groups of six or more to write in, and It's My Park asks groups of ten or more to request a project. For companies, volunteering in New York is often sold as a sponsorship: Food Bank for NYC, Randall's Island Park Alliance and Billion Oyster Project all publish corporate volunteer packages in the thousands of dollars.

The costs and headcounts are compared in our team-building guide.

Closed, moved or paused

Programmes that stopped, were cancelled, or publish no schedule an individual can use. We dropped them rather than send you to a gate that is locked.

Socrates Sculpture Park (slug socrates-sculpture-park)

Dropped from the list: no recurring volunteer programme published. The only clean-up found was the one-off Climate Week day (Sept 2025, on NYC Parks' calendar); socratessculpturepark.org/events and /get-involved return 404

Questions people ask

Where can I volunteer in NYC this weekend without signing up?+
Randall's Island Urban Farm takes drop-in volunteers on Sunday mornings from April to mid-October, Snug Harbor's Heritage Farm on Staten Island encourages walk-ups on Saturday mornings while there is room, and It's My Park welcomes walk-ons at its seasonal projects. Almost everything else in the city needs a booking.
How do I start volunteering in New York City?+
Pick a shift from the weekday table on this page, then do the organisation’s orientation before your first date: an online session for City Harvest and New York Cares, an information session for Central Park Conservancy. For a wider search, NYC Service is the city’s official volunteer portal and New York Cares lists over a thousand projects a month.
Can kids volunteer in NYC?+
Yes. Central Park Family Volunteer Days take children 4 and up with a parent; City Harvest repack and Food Bank for NYC's mobile pantry take 10 and up with a chaperone; God's Love We Deliver takes 13 to 15-year-olds with a parent in the kitchen. Adult-only programmes include Central Park's weekly crews, GrowNYC and Animal Care Centers.
Where can I volunteer at a soup kitchen in NYC?+
Holy Apostles Soup Kitchen in Chelsea runs volunteer shifts Monday to Friday; Xavier Mission's Welcome Table serves on Sundays; Masbia runs kosher soup kitchens in Flatbush and Borough Park Monday to Thursday; the Grand Central Food Program runs weekday evenings; Part of the Solution runs a community dining room in the Bronx. Book in advance on each organisation's site.
Is there volunteering in Central Park?+
Central Park Conservancy runs a Saturday Green Team every week year-round, weekly landscape crews on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays, and family and teen days on Saturdays. The adult programmes are 18 and over and start with an information session.

How this page was made, and who made it

Every fact above was read from the organisation's own site, or the sign-up page it links to, in September 2026. Where a page printed dates without a year, or two pages from the same organisation disagreed, the entry says so. Subway directions are our own where an organisation does not print them.

This site is published by KraftStories, a craft studio in the Financial District. We have no relationship with any organisation on this page.

Our editorial standards spell out the rest.
