Pottery classes in NYC: every studio, priced per session

34 pottery studios across all five boroughs — wheel throwing, handbuilding, one-night sip-and-spin and paint-your-own — with the term price, the per-session cost, the firing fee and the practice-time rate. Every figure was read off the studio's own website in September 2026.

Where a studio publishes no price, this page says so rather than guessing. Where two pages on the same site disagree, both are reported.

The short answer

A multi-week pottery class in New York costs about $65 a session at a typical studio, and most land between $60 and $90. A term runs six to thirteen weeks, so expect $400 to $1,000 up front. The cheapest wheel teaching in the city is Gasworks NYC in Greenwood Heights, sold on a sliding scale from $75 for twelve weeks, and the Bronx River Art Center at $42 a class.

To try it once, a one-night wheel class or sip-and-spin costs $75 to $95; paint-your-own starts at $18. On top of tuition, many studios charge a firing fee by the cubic inch, and practice time outside class is sold separately at most of them.

How pottery classes in New York actually work

There are two techniques and three formats, and knowing which you want saves most of the confusion. Wheel throwing is the one in films: clay centred on a spinning wheel and pulled up into a cylinder, then shaped into mugs, bowls and vases. It takes a few weeks before anything comes off the wheel the shape you meant. Handbuilding uses no wheel at all — pinch pots, coils and slabs rolled flat and joined — and is the faster route to a finished plate, planter or candle holder.

The formats are the one-night taster (two hours, often with drinks, sold as sip-and-spin or date night), the multi-week course (one three-hour class a week for six to thirteen weeks, where you actually learn), and membership, for people who already throw and want a wheel and a kiln. A course is where the money goes and where the studios differ most.

The part nobody explains on the booking page is time. Clay has to dry, be bisque-fired, glazed and fired again, so a piece made tonight is usually ready to collect one to three weeks later. That is why pottery classes need several visits, and why a one-night class often charges extra to "finish" your piece.

What a pottery class costs, ranked

Per-session cost is our arithmetic, not a number any studio prints: the standard course price divided by the number of classes. It is the only honest way to compare a six-week course with a thirteen-week semester.

7 studios publish no course price and are not in this table; they are in the full list below. Where a studio sells on a sliding scale or has several tiers, the figure is its standard tier and the range is printed beneath it.

Pottery for one night: sip-and-spin, date night and paint-your-own

For a birthday, a date or a first try. These are the studios that print a price for a single session; most include the clay and the firing, and most need a week or two before your piece is ready to collect.

Paint-your-own means glazing a ready-made piece of bisque, not making one. It is the cheapest and the fastest, and the only format here that suits small children.

The fees that arrive later: firing, clay and tools

The number on the booking page is tuition. At many studios the firing is billed separately, by the size of the piece, after the course has started.

Studios that fire your work in their own kilns usually charge by volume — length times width times height of the piece, in cubic inches — rather than by the hour. The printed rates below run from 3 to 9 cents a cubic inch. Watch whether the rate is per firing or for both firings: almost every piece is fired twice, so 4 cents per firing is 8 cents in practice. A mug costs a few dollars either way. A term of large bowls is a second bill.

Gasworks NYC3.5 cents per cubic inch (bisque, cone 6 electric, cone 10 gas and luster) on the class page

Registration dates and sold-out classes

If you want to start this month, not next term

Go for the short formats: the six-week courses at Mud Matters, Choplet, Clayhouse and Bushwick Ceramics, Earthworks' six-week sessions, or a one-night class from the table above. Several autumn sections at the larger studios — Scratch Ceramics and most of 92NY's — were already sold out when we checked.

Pottery classes by borough

Manhattan · 13

Brooklyn · 11

Queens · 7

The Bronx · 1

Staten Island · 2

The Bronx has one adult wheel programme we could confirm, the Bronx River Art Center at West Farms, and Staten Island has two studios. Brooklyn and Manhattan hold most of the city's kilns; Ridgewood and Long Island City are where the newer, cheaper Queens studios have opened.

Know before you book

Beginners are welcome almost everywhere

Every studio with a course runs a beginner section. The exceptions are specific slots: Mud Matters keeps its Monday 6:15 pm wheel class for people who have thrown before.

Bring a towel and old clothes

Wheel throwing is wet. Short nails help. Most studios lend basic tools; BrickHouse and BKLYN CLAY sell kits, and La Mano asks you to bring your own.

Your piece is not ready tonight

Drying, bisque firing, glazing and a second firing take one to three weeks. One-night classes either post your piece a date to collect or charge to finish it.

Ask what "open studio" means

Some studios include practice hours with the course, some sell them by the visit, and some only offer them to members on a three-month minimum.

Sliding scales are real prices

Gasworks sells the same twelve weeks at $75, $375 or $675 and asks you to pick the tier that fits your circumstances. Its course is written for Black and brown students, so read the page before you register.

Private and group sessions

Brooklyn Clay Industries prints $185 for a private or master class; Choplet, Gotham Pottery and Pottery Studio 1 all sell group bookings. Most quote group prices only on request.

BKLYN CLAY — South Slope studio, 673 Fifth Ave

Moved/closed: the current site lists only Prospect Heights (535 Carlton Ave) and Tribeca (288 West St); the old www page with the 673 Fifth Ave address and Spring 2024 dates is stale. 673 Fifth Ave is now the address Gasworks NYC gives. Date of change not stated.

Source ↗

al•ter•work studios — Astoria address

Probably moved: its own autumn 2026 class pages give 40-20 22nd St, LIC; directory listings still show 30-09 35th Ave, Astoria. The move is not dated on its site.

Source ↗

Uptown Clay — 4470 Broadway

Address discrepancy, not a closure: its own site gives 178 Bennett Ave; the Kiln Fire directory lists 4470 Broadway. Use Bennett Ave.

Source ↗

Greenwich House Pottery — 16 Jones St (planned)

Not closed. Its renovation FAQ says the building will close for about 11–13 months in phase 5, “not before Fall 2025”. Autumn 2026 classes are running at both sites, so no date is set yet.

Questions people ask

How much is a pottery class in NYC?+
A multi-week class costs about $65 a session at a typical New York studio, with most between $60 and $90 and the full range running $31.25 to $90. A course is six to thirteen weeks, so $400 to $1,000 is paid up front. A one-night class or sip-and-spin is $75 to $95, and paint-your-own starts at $18. Firing is often charged on top at 3 to 9 cents a cubic inch.
What is the cheapest pottery class in New York?+
Gasworks NYC in Greenwood Heights sells a twelve-week course on a sliding scale of $75, $375 or $675 — about $6, $31 or $56 a session. The Bronx River Art Center charges $42 a class for adult wheel throwing and $35 for handbuilding, paid for the whole term at registration. For a single session, paint-your-own at The Painted Pot in Park Slope starts at $18.
Is wheel throwing or handbuilding better for beginners?+
Handbuilding gets you a finished piece faster, because pinching, coiling and slab work need no wheel skills. Wheel throwing takes a few weeks to click but is what most people picture. Most New York studios run beginner sections of both, and several combine them in one course.
Where can I do pottery for a date night in NYC?+
Choplet in Greenpoint runs Sip & Spin at $90, Scratch Ceramics in Ridgewood runs Sip and Spin at $85, Off Center Ceramics in Williamsburg sells a Date Night at $250 for two, and Gotham Pottery and Pottery Studio 1 in Manhattan both sell date-night and couples' sessions. Your piece is usually ready one to two weeks later.
What is a firing fee?+
Studios that fire your work in their kilns charge by the volume of the piece — typically 3 to 9 cents a cubic inch, sometimes per firing, so doubled because pieces are fired twice. A mug costs a few dollars; a term of large bowls adds up. Several studios include firing in the class price; the table on this page lists every published rate.
Is there a pottery class in the Bronx or on Staten Island?+
Yes. The Bronx River Art Center at 1087 E Tremont Ave in West Farms runs adult wheel and handbuilding classes priced per class. On Staten Island, Silk Road Ceramics in New Brighton runs eight-week wheel courses and one-hour Spin N' Paint sessions, and Clay and Kiln in West Brighton is paint-your-own with drop-in hours most days.

How this page was made, and who made it

Every figure above was read from the studio's own website in September 2026 — not from an aggregator, not from another guide. Where two pages on the same site disagreed, both are reported. Where a studio publishes nothing, the field is blank rather than filled with a plausible number. Transit directions for studios that do not print them are our own reading of the subway map.

This site is published by KraftStories, a craft studio in the Financial District. KraftStories teaches an air-dry clay workshop and does not fire, so it is not a competitor to anything on this list and is not on it. The studios above are ordered by price, including the ones cheaper than anything we sell.

Our editorial standards spell out the rest.
